Demonic Strongholds
How they are formed, and how to break them
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."
Spiritual warfare is real, and many believers struggle with patterns of sin, addiction, or oppression without realizing there may be a demonic legal right behind their battles. The Bible warns that the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he often does so through three primary doorways:
- Inheritance (Generational curses, words spoken in the womb)
- Intrusion (Trauma, abuse, or extreme emotional distress)
- Involvement (Engagement with witchcraft, occult practices, or sin)
1. Inheritance: The Power of Words in the Womb
"I didn’t want this pregnancy..."
One of the most overlooked ways demons gain access is before birth. Scripture reveals that words carry spiritual weight (Proverbs 18:21), and this includes a mother’s words over her unborn child.
A Shocking Testimony:
A pastor once shared the story of his brother, who lived in extreme rebellion—drugs, violence, and a cycle of rededicating his life to Christ only to fall away again.
For years, the family prayed, fasted, and took him to conferences, but nothing changed—until their mother remembered something devastating.
She sat him down and confessed:
"When I was pregnant with you, I already had three children. I was exhausted and kept saying, ‘I don’t want this baby. I can’t handle another child.’ I believe those words gave the enemy a legal right over your life."
She then repented, broke the curse, and prayed over him. Almost immediately, his addiction lost its grip.
Key Lesson:
- Negative words spoken in pregnancy (especially rejection) can invite spirits of rebellion, self-hatred, or depression.
- Breaking the curse requires:
- Honest repentance from parents
- Renouncing the words
- Commanding the spirits to leave in Jesus’ name
2. Intrusion: Demonic Entry Through Trauma
"Nobody believed me..."
Demons often enter during moments of extreme vulnerability, particularly through:
- Childhood trauma (divorce, abandonment)
- Sexual abuse or molestation
- Severe emotional distress
A Deliverance Case Study:
A woman living a homosexual lifestyle came for prayer. The deliverance team asked:
- "Were you involved in witchcraft?" → "No."
- "Were you abused?" → She froze.
Tearfully, she admitted:
"My uncle raped me. I told my family, but nobody believed me."
That unresolved trauma gave demons a foothold. After leading her through:
- Forgiveness prayers (toward her abuser)
- Renouncing shame and hatred
- Commanding the spirits to leave
…she was set free.
Key Lesson:
- Unhealed trauma = open doors for oppression.
- Steps to freedom:
- Acknowledge the pain
- Forgive the abuser (Matthew 6:14-15)
- Break soul ties from the event
- Cast out attached spirits (fear, perversion, self-loathing)
3. Involvement: When Curiosity Invites Torment
"I thought the dog wasn’t home..."
The third—and most common—way demons enter is through direct involvement with:
- Witchcraft, Ouija boards, astrology
- "Harmless" occult practices (yoga chakras, burning sage)
- Addiction to dark media (horror, demonic-themed games)
A Personal Warning:
A minister shared a childhood story where he mocked a demon-possessed dog—getting just close enough to taunt it but staying out of reach.
One day, he assumed the dog was gone and crawled into its kennel out of curiosity.
The attack was instant. The dog mauled his leg, leaving him with 37 stitches—and a lifelong lesson:
"Demons don’t play fair. If you give them an inch, they’ll take everything."
Key Lesson:
- Even "innocent" occult practices (tarot cards, psychics, "Christian" Ouija boards) invite torment as these practices open doors for the spiritual or demonic realm where the devil reigns supreme.
- Breaking free requires:
- Repentance from all occult involvement
- Renouncing every curse
- Closing all demonic portals in Jesus’ name

- Identify the open door (Was it generational? Trauma? Sin?)
- Repent and renounce all ties to it.
- Command the spirits to leave in Jesus' name (Mark 16:17).
- Fill the void with God’s Word (Luke 11:24-26).
Final Encouragement:
If you’re struggling with repeating cycles of sin, depression, or oppression, ask God to reveal the root. Then take authority over it!
"Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)
